Project at a Glance
Constant Monitoring System (CMS) with Stormwater Closure
Unroofed brewery hardstand exposed to rainfall and brewing-related spills
Automated stormwater compliance and protection of a nearby creek
The Task
Fox Environmental Systems was engaged to design and manufacture a solution for pollution detection and stormwater closure at Sydney Brewery Hunter Valley, located within Rydges Resort in Lovedale, NSW.
The primary task was to manage stormwater discharge from an operational hardstand area exposed to rainfall and potential brewing-related spills.
Due to the site’s proximity to a nearby creek, there was a critical need to prevent contaminated runoff from entering the stormwater network.
The system was required to support ongoing environmental compliance while allowing normal site operations to continue uninterrupted.
Plan
In collaboration with Akuna Engineering, a custom solution was designed to address the site-specific risks and operational conditions. The Fox Constant Monitoring System (CMS) with Stormwater Closure was strategically installed on the hardstand adjacent to the brewing silos, where kegs and brewing fluids are regularly handled.
This area is unroofed, with exposure to rainfall and the possibility of contaminated runoff in the event of a spill.
The system was calibrated to continuously monitor runoff quality and detect dissolved pollutants in real time.
Solution

Each time the CMS pit fills, the water is automatically assessed against preset compliance parameters.
If water quality exceeds allowable limits, the system diverts the spill to a collection tank, activates an alarm, and automatically closes the stormwater outlet.
This diversion continues until water quality returns to compliant levels, ensuring only uncontaminated stormwater is discharged.
The installed system provides a robust, automated safeguard that protects the adjacent waterway, reduces environmental risk, and supports ongoing regulatory and council compliance.
